Chapter 1

Forgotten.

Gal mitthi mitthi bol, ras kaano vich ghol
Bajne de taashe dhol, masti mein tu vi dol
Mann de naina tu khol, chahat ke moti rol
Dil hunda ae anmol, ke daulat se na tol

2 Weeks Later

“The engagement is this evening, not a month later. Work faster! You all will need hours to get ready,” my mom shouts at Sara, Sahil, and Daksh, who are helping her pack gifts for the groom's family.

“At the speed they're working, I don't think they'll be done until next month,” I butt in while lounging on the couch, with my laptop in my lap, making a few changes in the playlist for the evening.

Sara shoots me a stink eye, while both my brothers ignore my jab.

“Maybe you should help instead of making snarky comments while sitting there,” my mother says, glaring at me.

I love my mother, but I also love to irritate her just as much.

I sit up straight, look at my mother, and with a toothy grin, I reply, “Sorry, Mom, but I've already done the work you assigned me, so I'm off-duty now.”

She shakes her head at me and gets back to her work, knowing she’ll have to bribe me with something to do extra chores. I return to my laptop, but my thoughts are elsewhere.

Since yesterday, I’ve had this nagging feeling that I’m forgetting something important related to the engagement. I made a checklist of all the tasks assigned to me—Di’s outfit, décor, music, and guest list. I double-checked it with both my sister and mother, but I know in my gut that something’s missing.

“Your saviour is here,” I hear Aryaman's annoying voice before I see his face. He enters the living room with a stupid grin, arms wide open, one holding his laptop and the other his black robe.

“Mr. Saviour, now that you’ve finally arrived, two hours late,” Sara begins with a smile, “why don’t you start helping us instead of mimicking a sadistic criminal who wanted the world to kneel in front of him.” There is a collective gasp at the end of her sentence.

Sahil, her twin, chimes in, “There’s a reason behind that and at the end he sacrificed himself to save the world, okay. Just because you’re my twin, I’m letting this slide. Never disrespect Loki ever again. Understand?”

“I am with him on this,” I say, getting up from my place and dragging Aryaman with me to my room. I need to talk to someone about my potential mess.

“Isha, where are you taking him?” my mom shouts behind me.

“Two minutes, Maa. It's something important.”

We enter my room, and I close the door behind us. I look at him with a nervous smile.

He looks at me suspiciously for a second before asking, “What have you done now?”

"That’s the issue. I don’t remember.” He looks at me with a tired expression, lifting his eyebrow, signalling me to continue.

“I don’t know. I’ve had this feeling since yesterday that I’ve forgotten something really important related to the engagement.”

“Did you check your list? You must have written everything down, right?”

“Yes, I did, and everything on the list is completed,” I say, handing my phone to him.

He takes my phone and starts examining my planner with intense concentration.

As Aryaman scrutinises my planner, his eyes narrow in concentration. I pace back and forth, the knot of anxiety tightening in my stomach. Finally, he looks up, shaking his head slightly.

"Everything on your list seems to be checked off. Are you sure you didn’t forget anything?"

“I know, but something’s off. What if I missed a crucial detail?”

Aryaman scrolls through my planner again, and then, almost as if struck by a lightning bolt, his eyes widen.

“Wait a minute,” he says, looking up at me with a mixture of disbelief and urgency. “Did you pick up the engagement ring from the jeweller?”

My heart skips a beat. The engagement ring! The one which my sister was going to put on her groom’s finger. How could I forget something so important?

“Oh no,” I groan, smacking my forehead. “I completely forgot! I was supposed to pick it up yesterday!”

Aryaman’s face mirrors my panic for a split second before he springs into action. “Okay, let’s not freak out. The shop will be open right now, and we can pick it up. There are still five hours until the engagement.”

“Yeah, but we can't let anybody know. They will start panicking. Besides, I just boasted in front of everyone that I have done all my work. I don't want to get scolded by my mother right now.”

“Okay, let's go.”

“No, I'll go. You distract them, and if anybody asks about me, just tell them that I had some urgent work and I'll be back in an hour.”

He nods in understanding before looking at me with a boyish grin and says, “Why did I think that the function would go smoothly? Agar Mehrotra's ke function mein Kalesh na ho toh complete kaise hoga?”

“Ho gaya tumhara, go downstairs. I'll leave from the back gate.”

“Okay, call me if anything happens.”

“Yeah, and thanks, Arya, for saving my ass.”

With a small bow, he says, “My pleasure,” and exits my room.

I quickly got ready and  managed to sneak out of the house without getting caught. The traffic is, as usual, a nightmare. I can feel the seconds ticking away like a countdown in my head.

Finally, the car screeches to a halt in front of the jewellery store. I park in a no-parking zone because the store's parking is on the other side, and I don't have time. Besides, it will take a couple of minutes. I'll be in and out in no time. Nothing will happen, right? I practically leap out of the car and rush inside.

“Hi, I am here to pick up the ring!” I gasp, out of breath.

The jeweller, an elderly gentleman with a kind smile, nods. “Ah, yes, Ishani. I’ve been expecting you. Just in time.” He disappears into the back and returns with a small, elegant box. Relief floods through me as I take the box from him.

“Thank you so much!” I exclaim, beaming at him.

As I exit the jeweler's, I hear my car's alarm blaring. Before I see it, I notice another car parked dangerously close to my car's rear end. A guy is standing next to it, staring at the damage. As I approach, I see a sizable dent on my car, clearly caused by the other vehicle. I assume this guy is the owner.

"Great, just what I needed," I mutter under my breath.

Why God?Why am I the one who ends up in such situations?
